It means people are going to ignore you on the front page. Its impact on the majority of oppo will be minimal.

Before some Kinja update in the past, there was a different commenting system with two sections - normal and grey. People that were "approved commenters" i.e. followed by Jalopnik or in this case, Oppositelock would show up in normal section. People that were not were put in the grey section, because unlike the normal section, comments in the grey were highlighted a grey colour. Grey comments also required opening to see, whereas normal comments showed up immediately.

At least that's how I think it used to work...

EDIT: Also, if you are an author on Oppo, you will show up in the normal section, regardless of whether or not you have been followed by Oppo. On the Jalopnik Front Page though, you'll be in the grey.

Regular person -> followed -> author

You're an author (obviously, since you posted this) so you are a step above someone ''followed''. Being followed is the ABSOLUTE MINIMUM status for someones comments to appear in black text instead of grey "unimportant" text that also gets hidden behind another button-click in the comments section.

when you want to post here there is a blockage of all comments - hence they are ' grey'

if you are a regular commentator and get 'followed' you go black = comments instantly posted and no waiting in grey area.

if you are a author = you are instantly black - no grey

if you are followed by any of hte blogs - like truck yeah you are the 'regular; commentor and your comments should go black.

If you have authorship, you don't need to be followed.

You are an author, which is a step up from being followed. That means you will not be grey on oppo and you have the power to un-grey people. I am not entirely clear on your status for Jalopnik though.

Alright, so, prior to this latest incarnation of the commenting system it was set up so that there were essentially two comment sections on any post - one for approved commenters that would automatically appear, and one hidden behind a "See All" button for unapproved commenters. When you clicked that button, all the unapproved posts would show up beneath the approved ones but slightly greyed out as a visual cue, hence the term "the grey."

So, if you're not followed (approved) by a blog itself or one of its writers, your comments will show up under the "See All" grey section. If you are followed, in your case on Truck Yeah, your comments will automatically be above all the grey stuff and thus more visible to readers.

Since you're an Oppo author, though, it doesn't matter that you're not followed by OppositeLock the blog. You're like a level above being followed and so your comments will stay approved here.

Back in the old days of Jalopnik the system of commenting had two tiers. Stared commentors earned their stars over and would have their comments displayed. Grayed out commentors were in a separate section that could only be move to to the stared comment section after receiving the equivalent of a recommendation by a stared commentor. Over time with enough good comments you could get your own star and not need to worry.

Okay, so dumb question (maybe) for clarification. Because I can post - and have been - right here in Oppoland (blogs, etc.) I should be good to go? And will said "good to go" include, at some point, pictures in the comments sections on Jalopnik and sub-blogs like Truck Yeah and Car Buying?

If you have been given authorship on a particular sub-blog, your comments will be in the normal section, but only on those particular blogs. Unless of course, you are being followed by that particular sub-blog.
